Dr. Susan Roberts: Eyes of Sepsis: A National Campaign for Early Sepsis Recognition

Eyes of Sepsis™

Learn About Sepsis — Where Time Runs Out in Silence™

Sepsis can move quietly and quickly. Eyes of Sepsis™ turns urgency into instinct — training families and clinicians to see the signs early and act fast with CRUSH 33™.

Why this matters

Sepsis is a medical emergency. Delays in recognition and treatment drive worse outcomes — minutes matter. We replace hesitation with reflex so fewer lives are lost to silence. No paywall. No delay. Just action.

See it early: common warning signs

Body changes

  • Fever, chills, or feeling very cold
  • Fast heart rate or breathing
  • Low blood pressure, dizziness

Mind changes

  • Confusion, new agitation
  • Very sleepy or hard to wake

Skin changes

  • Mottled, clammy, pale or flushed
  • Cool hands/feet, bluish lips

Gut & urine changes

  • Severe pain, vomiting, swollen belly
  • Very little or dark urine, burning

If you suspect sepsis: seek urgent care now and say “I’m worried about sepsis.”

Silence vs. Action

Silence

  • “Watch and wait.”
  • Symptoms ignored or fragmented.
  • Time passes — organs are injured.

Action

  • Say “sepsis” early.
  • Connect the dots: infection + instability.
  • Start CRUSH 33™ and escalate.

CRUSH 33™ — the first 33 minutes

C — Call it early

Say “possible sepsis” and trigger your pathway.

R — Rush vitals, cultures, labs

U — Use the protocol

Fluids, antimicrobials, source control per guidance.

S — Speak up, speak fast

Close the loop and escalate for instability.

H — Hold the clock accountable

Reassess rapidly; move to higher care if needed.

Mission & Credits

Mission: Eyes of Sepsis™ exists to end the silence that steals lives. We turn urgency into instinct, awareness into action, and silence into a global rallying cry. Every eye opened to sepsis is a life saved.

Goal: A world where sepsis is never missed, never ignored, and never fatal because of delay — uniting clinicians, families, and communities to act with speed, precision, and accountability in the first critical minutes.
